ALLEGRO ENSEMBLE

ABOUT US

Allegro Ensemble is a small friendly band, who meet fortnightly to play together and socialize. We don't take ourselves too seriously, the atmosphere is very chilled out and full of fun! I wanted to set up a chance for adult musicians to play together in an informal setting, something that is especially rare in Stoke-on-Trent.

Allegro originally began in 2007 as Clariphones Ensemble, when I got some of my Clarinet and Saxophone pupils together as a chance to meet each other and play music as a group. In 2012  I re-branded the ensemble as Fusion to allow a wider range of instruments to join. From March 2015 the ensemble was re-branded again as Allegro. Because I had no interest from musicians aged under 18 for a few years, I then decided to make it officially adults only. My reasoning is that some adults may not feel comfortable with the idea of being in the same group as children. Due to the very positive rise of brilliant ensembles and orchestras within the city's music service, I feel that under 18 musicians are very well catered for whereas adults are not. New to 2017 I have set up the Training Rhythm Section within in the band to enable less experienced musicians to join. I hope this will lead to encouraging more adult musicians to make music together!

THE BAND STRUCTURE

From January 2017, Allegro consists of 2 sections playing together, the Training Rhythm Section and the Main Instrument Section.

NEW! TRAINING RHYTHM SECTION

The Training Rhythm Section is designed to enable any musician aged 18 or over, who has developed a basic sense of pulse, to be able to join a band. This is ideal if you are still beginning to learn an instrument and how to read music but are a way off playing fluently. Training Rhythm  members play simple percussion instruments by ear alongside the Main Instrument Section who provide the melody and harmony of the pieces. No music reading is involved, simply come along, join the fun and get the feel of playing together with other musicians!

MAIN INSTRUMENT SECTION

The Main Instrument Section is open to musicians aged 18 or over who are nearing Grade 2 standard or above. This includes musicians who do not have music lessons with me as well as current pupils. If you are unsure where you are up to with your playing but can read music reasonably well in different keys, you will also be very welcome to join!

Although we presently consist of only Clarinets and Saxophones, Allegro is also open to:

Woodwind, Brass, String,  Percussion and Keyboard instruments.
